Britain has some of the most intriguing and interesting wildlife in Europe and you don’t have to go to the Outer Hebrides to enjoy it (but if you live there, you already know how great it is.

This morning, how about popping out to a nearby park, common, woods or nature reserve – especially if you have children or grandchildren – and see what interesting things you can spot (you could even root around the bottom of the garden if you don’t fancy going too far).

Make sure you take a camera (mobile phone will do) and snap as many different birds, insects, plants and mammals as you can find.

Then head back to the house and, with the help of some of the websites listed below, see how many you and the children can identify.

You could create an online scrapbook for all the species and get the children to research their habitats and eating patterns.
